What was happening in the world in 1927

On 20 and 21 May 1927 Charles Lindbergh took the Spirit of St. Louis alone and nonstop from New York to Paris, more than 33 hours in the air. That October The Jazz Singer, with Al Jolson singing and speaking on screen, helped bring the silent-film era to an end. In China the alliance between the Kuomintang and the Communists broke apart: forces loyal to Chiang Kai-shek crushed the Communists in Shanghai in April, and on 1 August Communist-led troops rose at Nanchang, a date the People's Liberation Army later took as its birthday. In the United States the Mississippi flooded huge areas, and more than 200,000 African Americans lost their homes. In physics, Werner Heisenberg set out the uncertainty principle, and Georges Lemaître noticed that distant bodies recede faster the farther away they are, two years before Hubble published the same idea. In Brisbane, Thomas Parnell poured hot pitch for an experiment in which a single drop takes years to form.

This page lists all 500 events in our records for 1927: 325 dated to the day, 97 from outside Europe and North America. The biggest come first, then every event month by month, grouped by region.
